The Jamaica Medical Students’ Association (JAMSA) is the executive body representing over 600 medical students in the prestigious Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, Jamaica. One of the main aims of the Faculty of Medical Sciences is to recruit and train capable and committed students as health care professionals who will be able to meet the health needs of the people of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
The size and admixture of the student population of the Medical Faculty, at the UWI, Mona Campus, has increased since its inception in 1948. In addition to Caribbean nationals, the population now includes students from the United States, the United Kingdom, and even Botswana.
The faculty’s success in the formulation of new drugs for the treatment of glaucoma and asthma has earned them international recognition in the field of research. The Jamaican medical community is renowned for its outstanding care of patients with haemoglobinopathies.
The UWI measures its teaching methods and curriculum by first world standards in a bid to produce professionals who are adaptable in a changing medical world. |
